Pros and Cons of Mineral Oils

Statististically mineral oil is an extremely common ingredient in personal skin care product.

You don’t believe me? Well then, check your moisturizers or better yet your hair product. Even something as common as lipbalm has mineral oil product!

Mineral oil’s popularity has nothing to do with its effectiveness on skin, just the price tag and its availability compared to essential oils and mercerated oils and trust me no one would be caught dead applying vegetable oil!

Before Synthetic oil was invented, Mineral oil was predominantly used as a Mechanical Lubricant. Okay see according to Environmental Working Group, mineral oil is derived from Petroleum which is a product of Crude Oil-straight from earth’s belly and may be contaminated with Cancer-causing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Yeah you heard me Cancer-causing PAHs!

Okay before i scare you off i’d like to mention Mineral oil does act as a Moisturizing agent, that fact is true enough. How you ask?

Kim Anderson, a health care Consultant to Arbonne International states that “mineral oil coats the skin like plastic wrap…”

Plastic wrap?

This actually transitions me to another point

She goes on “…disrupting the skin’s natural immune barrier and inhibiting its ability to breathe and absorb the ‘natural moisture Factor’ (moisture and nutrition).”

This actually leads to:

      1. Acne

  1. Premature ageing of skin

And get this, the skin isn’t the only part being affected. See applying it to the skin repeatedly could actually cause various negative hormonal effects such as:

  1. Ovarian disfunction
  2. Endometriosis
  3. Miscarriages
  4. Damage to immune system

Kim Anderson states.

So then you ask, what then are the Pros of mineral oil apart from its price tag?

Well for instance it can be very useful in sealing the skin from outside particles, but still this can lead to pimples and black heads.

It could also be useful in keeping a patch of skin dry while it heals.

Mothers also preffer to use it to cover baby skin as diaper rash heals.
